The shady side of the roof
Bo’ness climbs straight up from the shore, and most of its houses look north across the Forth. That view comes at a price for the roof. A north-facing slope gets very little sun, so it stays damp for most of the year, and damp roofs grow moss, block gutters and slowly loosen tiles. Our yard is in Laurieston, about fifteen minutes away along the A904, and a lot of the roofing work Kerse Roofing & Building do in Bo’ness starts with that damp side of the roof.
On a south-facing slope the sun dries the tiles out after rain. On the north side of a Bo’ness house, the tiles can stay wet for days. Moss takes hold in the gaps, holds even more water, and as it grows it lifts the bottom edge of the tiles and lets wind and rain get underneath. In winter the trapped water freezes and cracks tiles that would otherwise last for decades. The moss also washes down into the gutters, where it builds up until they overflow down the wall.
The fix is rarely a new roof. It is clearing the moss properly, replacing any tiles it has cracked, and getting the gutters running again, before small problems turn into a leak. We do all three in one visit where we can.
Where roofs step down the hill
A lot of Bo’ness housing is built in terraces that step down the slope, so each roof sits a little lower than its neighbour. Every step is a joint: a wall rising above the next roof, with flashings or a mortar fillet sealing the gap. Those joints move, crack and open up over time, and they are where many leaks in a hillside terrace begin. Water can run a long way inside before it shows on a ceiling, so we trace it back to the step it came from instead of guessing.
Steep streets also make access harder. Ladders and scaffolding have to be set out carefully on a slope, and we plan that as part of the quote, so there are no surprises on the day.

I am most pleased with the workmanship and work ethic of the Kerse team who replaced my flat roof. The team were on time and incredibly hard working, neat, most polite and anxious to please. Though the job got delayed two days due to rain, they more than made up for it by completing work in less than 2 days. I would fully recommend Kerse roofing to anyone looking for excellent service!
Why Bo’ness homeowners call Kerse
- One visit, three jobs. Moss, tiles and gutters are usually connected, so we look at all three and sort them together.
- We find the real leak. On a stepped terrace, the damp patch is often nowhere near the fault. We trace it before quoting.
- Access planned up front. Steep streets are factored into the quote, not added on afterwards.
- Work that is guaranteed. Up to 10 years on our workmanship depending on the job, and full insurance on every job.
- Reviewed by local customers. More than 100 reviews on Google, Yell, Checkatrade and FreeIndex.
Questions from Bo’ness homeowners
Why is the back of my roof greener than the front?
Because it gets far less sun. In Bo’ness the back slope of many houses faces north towards the Forth, so it stays damp long after rain and moss grows much faster there. The front can look fine while the back needs attention, so it is worth a look from the garden.
How often should moss be cleared from a north-facing roof?
It depends on how shaded the roof is, but on a damp north-facing slope a check every few years is sensible, and sooner if you can see moss along the tile edges or your gutters keep filling up. We will tell you honestly whether it needs doing yet.
Why does my terraced roof leak where it meets next door's?
Because that join is one of the weakest points on a stepped terrace. The flashing or mortar fillet where one roof meets the wall above the next can crack or pull away, and water gets in behind it. Renewing that seal properly usually stops the leak.
Can you work on steep streets?
Yes. Ladders and scaffolding have to be set out carefully on a slope, so we plan access when we look at the job and include it in the written quote. You will know what is involved before any work starts.
Do you cover Blackness and Polmont too?
Yes. We cover all of Bo’ness, plus Blackness, Polmont, Grangemouth and Linlithgow. Our yard in Laurieston is around fifteen minutes from Bo’ness. Just outside those? Give us a ring and we will tell you straight away.
