Protecting the house while the walls are done
Wet-dash roughcast is thrown onto the wall, so everything around it needs covering first. Windows, doors, sills, paths, driveways and planting are sheeted and taped before any mix goes near the wall, and scaffolding or towers go up so the finish is even from eaves to ground. Weather matters too: we do not apply roughcast in frost or heavy rain, because it will not cure properly, so we plan the days around the forecast.
What affects the price of roughcasting
The main factors are the wall area, how much of the old roughcast has to come off, and the access. Patching a blown section on one gable is a small job. Stripping a whole house back to the block or brick and re-coating it needs scaffolding and several days of work. Detached houses and awkward elevations over extensions or conservatories take more setting up than a straight terrace. After a free survey you get a fixed written price for your walls, with no callout fee.
How a house is roughcast
- Survey and tap-test. We sound the existing roughcast for hollow, blown areas and check for cracks, damp and failed beads at corners and openings.
- Strip or patch back. Blown and loose render is hacked off to sound backing, or the whole wall is stripped where the finish has failed throughout.
- Base coat. A scratch coat goes on to level and seal the wall, with new beads at corners, window reveals and the base of the wall.
- Dash coat. The final wet-dash harl or roughcast is thrown on evenly, matched to the rest of the house or in the new finish you chose, and the site is cleaned down.

Roughcasting, harling and rendering, explained
They are different names for finishing and protecting your outside walls, and in Scotland the wet-dash finish is usually called roughcasting or harling. We cover the lot:

Why roughcast fails
Old roughcast cracks, hollows out and comes away from the wall over time, and once the seal is broken, water gets behind it. That leads to damp inside, more cracking, and staining down the wall. Tapping a wall and hearing a hollow sound is a sign the render has parted from the surface behind it. Catching it early with a repair is cheaper than leaving it to spread. When a finish is past patching, a full re-coat is the point where a house stops looking tired and starts looking cared for.

Common questions
What does "blown" roughcast mean?
Blown roughcast has lost its grip on the wall behind but has not fallen off yet. It sounds hollow when tapped and often bulges or cracks. Water gets in behind it and freezes, making it worse each winter. Blown areas have to be hacked off and redone, not painted or coated over.
What is the difference between roughcasting, harling and rendering?
Roughcasting and harling are names for the traditional Scottish wet-dash finish, hard-wearing and suited to our weather. Rendering is a smoother, more modern finish. We do all three and will advise which suits your home and the look you are after.
Can you repair a patch of roughcast rather than doing the whole house?
Yes. We patch cracked, blown or fallen render and match it in as closely as we can. If the finish is failing all over, a full re-coat gives a better and longer-lasting result. We will tell you honestly which makes sense.
Will new roughcasting stop damp?
Sound roughcast keeps water out of the walls. When old render cracks and comes away, water gets behind it and causes damp inside. A proper repair or re-coat seals the walls again, so it protects the house as well as smartening it up.
How long does roughcasting take?
It depends on the size of the house and the weather, but most whole-house jobs take several days. We give you a clear timescale with your written quote and work to the agreed dates.
Can you match my existing finish or change the colour?
Yes. We match an existing finish for a repair, or agree a new finish and colour for a full re-coat, so you get the look you want. We will talk the options through at the survey.
Do you repair pebbledash?
Yes. We repair and replace pebbledash and other dashed finishes, matching them in as closely as we can, or re-coat the whole wall if the finish has had its day.
Can you roughcast a garden wall?
Yes. Garden and boundary walls get the same treatment as a house: loose material removed, a base coat, then the dash coat, with the cope on top sealed so water does not get in behind. It is a smaller job and a quick way to smarten up the front of a property.
